St Chad's Church, Far Headingley is a beautiful old church in Far Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It's a parish church, which means it serves the local community. The church is a Grade II* listed building, meaning it's very important historically and architecturally. It was built in the Gothic Revival style, which looks like medieval churches. The church is named after Chad of Mercia, an important bishop who lived a long time ago, dying in AD 672. History of St Chad's Church
The church was built in 1868. The land was given by the Beckett family, who also paid a lot of money, £10,000, to help build it. The main architects were Edmund Beckett Denison and W. H. Crossland. The church has a very tall spire, which is about 186 feet high!
Changes and Updates Over Time
Between 1909 and 1911, St Chad's Church was changed quite a bit. They removed a round part called an apse and put in a rectangular chancel. They also added a Lady chapel and a special room for the organ. The organ, made by Harrison & Harrison, was built to fit this new space. It was updated in 1988 to use electric power and again in 2011 when the inside of the church was rearranged.
Above the altar, there's a beautiful stained-glass window called the "Creation window." It was designed by M. E. Aldrich Rope in 1922 and shows scenes from creation.
In 2002, the Lady Chapel was renamed the Chapel of St Oswald. This happened when St Oswald's church in Meanwood closed down. A glass wall was also put in.
Awards for Being Eco-Friendly
St Chad's is known for being kind to the environment! It won an "Eco-congregation" award. In November 2007, the church also won a national award from the Church Times newspaper. This was for its churchyard, which is a great place for wildlife to live.
St Chad's Home for Girls
In January 1889, a home for girls called St Chad's Home for Girls was opened. It was started by the Church of England Central Home for Waifs and Strays. A new home for the girls was opened in December 1894, and a special church service was held at St Chad's to celebrate.
