St Clement's Church is an important old building in Ordsall, Salford, England. It is a special type of building called a Grade II listed building. This means it is protected because of its history and unique design. The church is still used today as an Anglican parish church and is part of the Anglican Diocese of Manchester.

History of St Clement's Church

Building the Church

St Clement's Church was built a long time ago, between 1877 and 1878. It was designed by famous architects named Paley and Austin from Lancaster. Building the church cost about £9,000 back then. That would be a lot more money today!

A very generous person, Lord Egerton, gave the land for the church. He also paid for the church to be built and for the house where the church leader would live.

Church Life Over the Years

The church was open for many years, but it closed down in the 1980s. Luckily, it re-opened around 2005 and is still an active church today.

You can find St Clement's Church on Groves Avenue, which is just off Hulton Street in Ordsall. If you ride the Manchester Metrolink on the Eccles line, you might even spot the church from the tram!

The church is part of the Salford area in the diocese of Manchester. The current minister, who leads the church, is Rev. Sandra Kearney.

St Clement's and TV

Did you know that St Clement's Church has a connection to a famous TV show? You can see the church in some of the old closing credits of Coronation Street. Also, a street nearby called St. Clement's Drive was built where Archie Street used to be. Archie Street was actually the inspiration for the famous Coronation Street itself!

Architecture and Design

Church Style and Materials

St Clement's Church is built using red brick and a special type of baked clay called terracotta. It has a roof made of tiles. The church's design is based on the Gothic style from the 13th century. This means it has tall, pointed arches and large windows.

Inside the Church

Inside, the church has a long main area called a nave. On either side of the nave are aisles. Above the main part of the church, there's a row of windows called a clerestory that lets in light. The front part of the church, where the altar is, is called the chancel.

Above the chancel, there's a small, thin spire called a flèche. It's covered with Westmorland slate. The walls of the church have strong supports called buttresses. Along the aisles, there are seven windows, each with three sections. The clerestory has round windows.

At the very front of the church (the east end), there's a large window with five sections. Above it, you can see an arch and a pointed roof section called a gable. There are also three tall, narrow windows that are just for decoration.

At the back of the church (the west end), there's a unique entrance. It has a pointed roof (gable) and is made of shaped brick. There's also a round decoration made of terracotta with a pattern inside.

Inside Features

Inside, the main arches are supported by round sandstone pillars. The floor in the chancel is covered with special tiles from Royal Doulton. The walls in the chancel also have beautiful pictures called murals, which show religious scenes. These murals are also made of Doulton tiles. There's also a special seat for the clergy called a sedilia. The ceiling of the chancel is curved, like a vault.

Part of the nave has been made into a meeting room. The church also has a large organ with two keyboards, built by a company called Willis.

Protected Status

Because of its special design and history, St Clement's Church was officially named a Grade II listed building on January 18, 1980. This means it's an important part of England's heritage.

The church also has a community hall nearby, which is used for different activities.
