St John the Baptist Church is a really big church in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. It's part of the Church of England and is the largest church in this town.
A Look Back in Time
People have known about a church here since at least 1114. That's when King Henry I gave the "Church at Cnaresburgh" to a group of religious people called canons at Nostell Priory.
Changes Over the Years
At first, the church was named after St Mary. But in the 1500s, after some big changes in the English church (called the English Reformation), its name was changed to St John the Baptist. The church got its bells in 1774. Later, in 1884, a clock was put up. On February 5, 1952, this church was given a special title: a Grade I listed building. This means it's a very important historical building.
The Church Today
Today, you can find the church near Church Lane. It's right by the north side of the River Nidd. This church used to be where the Bishop of Knaresborough worked. The church is part of the Knaresborough parish. This parish belongs to the Archdeaconry of Richmond and Craven in the Diocese of Leeds.
