History of St John's Church
The church was built between 1852 and 1855. A talented architect named William Gilbee Habershon designed it. A lady named Mrs. Leycester paid for the church to be built. She wanted it to be a special memory for her husband. The front part of the church, called the chancel, was made for her family to use, not for a choir.
Church Design and Art
St John's Church is built from strong stone with a tiled roof. It has a main area called the nave and a side section called a north aisle. There is also a chancel and a small room called a vestry. The church has a tall steeple on its southwest side.
Inside the Church
Inside, the arches between the nave and the aisle are supported by round and eight-sided pillars. Mrs. Leycester, who was French, asked a French artist named Antoine Lusson to create the beautiful stained glass windows. These windows are in the east part of the church and in other chancel windows. They were made in 1853 and show scenes in a special four-leaf clover shape called a quatrefoil.
Modern Stained Glass
To celebrate the year 2000, new stained glass windows were added. These newer windows are in the north aisle.
The Church Organ
The church also has a large pipe organ with two keyboards. It was built in 1888 by C. Whiteley. Later, in 1929, it was repaired by Jardine and Company.
