St Thomas' Church is an active Anglican church located in the village of Milnthorpe, in Cumbria, England. It is a parish church, which means it serves the local community. The church is part of the diocese of Carlisle.

History of St Thomas' Church

The church was built between 1835 and 1837. It was designed by George Webster, an architect from Kendal. The church was big enough to hold 600 people.

Later, in 1883, a part of the church called the chancel was added. This work was done by Joseph Bintley. In 1912, architects from Lancaster, named Austin and Paley, made some changes to the west end of the church.

More recently, in 1982, a balcony area called the west gallery was removed. The church was also divided by a wall at that time.

Architecture and Features

St Thomas' Church is built using limestone, with special sandstone details. The church has a main area called the nave, a chancel, and a tall tower at the west end.

The nave has pairs of tall, narrow windows called lancet windows. It also has thin supports on the outside walls called buttresses. The chancel part of the church is built in a style known as Early English.

Many of the windows in the church feature beautiful stained glass. Some of these were made by F. Barrow of Milnthorpe in 1872 and 1885. Others were created by A. Burrow in 1886 and 1890. You can also see stained glass by famous companies like Heaton, Butler and Bayne (from 1879), Shrigley and Hunt (from 1898), and Abbott and Company (from 1928).

The church also has a set of six bells. These bells were made in 1912 by John Taylor & Co in Loughborough.
