Milnthorpe is a lovely village in Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria, England. It's about 7 miles south of Kendal. Long ago, it was part of Westmorland county. The village has old inns and a lively market every Friday. Around 2,200 people lived here in 2011, including the nearby village of Ackenthwaite.

Milnthorpe's Past
Milnthorpe got permission to hold a market way back in 1334! This permission stopped in the 1920s.
For a long time, Milnthorpe was part of a bigger area called Heversham. This changed in 1896. The beautiful Church of St Thomas was built in the 1800s. It was designed by a famous architect from Kendal, George Webster.
Milnthorpe became an important place for business because it used to be a port. Boats could travel on the River Bela and its estuary. Even today, it's a busy center for the area.
Village Life and Economy
Tourism is a big part of Milnthorpe's economy. Many years ago, the village had inns for travelers on the main road north. This road is now called the A6.
Milnthorpe used to have terrible traffic jams before new motorways opened in the 1970s. The village is very close to the beautiful Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape. The River Bela forms its northern edge.
Did you know the popular children's drink Um Bongo was made in Milnthorpe in the 1980s? Milnthorpe is also home to Duralon Combs, a comb-making business that is over 300 years old! A company called Big Fish Internet Ltd, which designs websites, started here in 1996. It's one of the oldest web design companies in the UK.
The Milnthorpe market was brought back in the 1980s. It helped the local council earn money. While it's smaller now, the market still happens every week. There's also a special farmers' market once a month.
How Milnthorpe is Governed
Milnthorpe is part of the Westmorland and Furness area. This is in the county of Cumbria. The village is in the parliamentary area of Westmorland and Lonsdale. Tim Farron has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for this area since 2005. He is a member of the Liberal Democrat party.
Milnthorpe also has its own local council, called a parish council.
Community and Schools
Milnthorpe has two schools. Dallam School is a secondary school for older students. Milnthorpe Primary School is for younger children.
The village also has three public houses, which are like local pubs.
Famous Landmarks Nearby
The grand house called Dallam Tower is close to Milnthorpe. It has a large estate with deer roaming freely. You can also see St Anthony's Tower on top of St Anthony's Hill.
There are nine historic buildings or structures in the parish. One of them is a footbridge over the River Bela. It was built in 1730 and used to be a road bridge!
Just north of Milnthorpe is Levens Hall. This famous place is known for its amazing shaped trees, called topiary.
Notable People from Milnthorpe
Tim Farron, who used to lead the Liberal Democrats party, lives in Milnthorpe. He is also the MP for the area.
John Taylor was born in Milnthorpe. He became the third president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He lived in Milnthorpe until he moved to Canada.
