History of Stabler

The Hemlock Lake Dam

The Hemlock Lake dam was built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This group helped build many projects during the Great Depression. The dam was first made to create electricity from water power. Later, in 1958, it was changed to provide water for the Wind River Tree Nursery.

The dam stopped making electricity in the 1950s. The water supply for the nursery is also no longer used. The Wind River Tree Nursery closed in 1997.

A Special Fish Ladder

The Hemlock Lake dam was the first dam in the Columbia River area to have a fish ladder. A fish ladder helps fish, like salmon, swim past a dam to reach their spawning grounds.

Dam Removal Project

In the summer of 2009, the Hemlock dam was taken down. This decision was made after many years of planning. The idea was to help restore the natural habitat of Trout Creek. Removing the dam helps fish and other wildlife in the area.
