Stanton is a city in Stanton County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,577 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stanton County. Stanton was platted in 1870. Both the city and county are named after Edwin Stanton, secretary of war for president Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War.

2010 census
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,577 people, 668 households, and 424 families residing in the city. The population density was 906.3 inhabitants per square mile (349.9/km2). There were 730 housing units at an average density of 419.5 per square mile (162.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.6% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 1.6% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.4% of the population.
There were 668 households, of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.5% were non-families. 33.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.00.
The median age in the city was 42 years. 27.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 21.4% were from 25 to 44; 26% were from 45 to 64; and 20.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 46.4% male and 53.6% female.
