Political Career and Views
Early Political Roles
In 1985, President Ronald Reagan chose Forbes to lead the Board of International Broadcasting (BIB). This group managed international radio stations like Radio Free Europe. President George H. W. Bush kept Forbes in this role. Forbes stayed as the BIB's leader until 1993.
After this, Forbes joined several conservative political groups. He was chairman of "Empower America" from 1993 to 1996. This group later joined with FreedomWorks. Through "Empower America," Forbes worked with politician Jack Kemp. Kemp later supported Forbes when he ran for president in 1996. Forbes also led "Americans for Hope, Growth and Opportunity," a group that supported pro-growth and pro-freedom ideas.
Forbes also helped his childhood friend, Christine Todd Whitman, with her plan to cut New Jersey's income tax. This plan was a big reason she won the election for governor.
Running for President
Steve Forbes ran for President of the United States in the 1996 and 2000 elections. His main idea was to create a flat tax. This means everyone would pay the same percentage of their income in taxes. Forbes believed the tax system was too complicated and needed to be simpler.
He also supported bringing back 4.5% mortgages and setting term limits for politicians in 1996. However, he focused mostly on the flat tax idea.
Forbes did not win the Republican nomination. He did win some primary elections, like in Arizona and Delaware in 1996. People sometimes said his way of campaigning was "awkward." He was known for traveling between events on a "big silver bus." For his 2000 campaign, he spent a lot of his own money to help fund his run.
After leaving the presidential race in 2000, Forbes went back to leading his magazine.
Other Political Activities
In 1996, Forbes helped Ron Paul in his election for Congress in Texas.
Actor Mark McKinney played Steve Forbes on the TV show Saturday Night Live. This show often makes fun of politicians. In one skit, he played a roofer, which was funny because it was so different from his usual serious image.
In 2006, Forbes joined the Board of Directors for FreedomWorks. He is also on the board of the National Taxpayers Union. Forbes is also a member of the board for The Heritage Foundation. This is an important research group in Washington, D.C..
Forbes often appears on the TV show Forbes on Fox. He discusses current events with other people from Forbes magazine.
