Steven Hill, whose real name was Solomon Krakovsky, was an American actor. He was born on February 24, 1922, and passed away on August 23, 2016. He became well-known for his roles in popular TV shows like Mission: Impossible and Law & Order.

Steven Hill's Acting Journey
Steven Hill helped start the famous Actors Studio in 1947. This was a special place where actors could learn and practice their craft. His first movie was A Lady Without Passport in 1950.
In 1952, he joined the U.S. Navy for two years. After that, he focused completely on his acting career. In 1955, he starred with Kim Stanley and Lloyd Bridges in a movie called The Goddess.
A Change in Career
In 1961, a play made Steven Hill think deeply about his faith. He decided to follow Orthodox Judaism. This meant he could not work on Friday evenings or Saturdays, which is the Jewish Sabbath. Because of this, he had to stop working in theater.
In 1966, he got a big role as Daniel Briggs in the CBS TV series Mission: Impossible. His character, Briggs, was the leader of a special team called I.M.F. However, Steven Hill left the show after just one season. He was replaced by Peter Graves. Hill had refused to work extra hours or reshoot scenes on the Sabbath. He also took time each day to pray.
After leaving Mission: Impossible, Hill took a break from acting for 10 years. He moved to a Jewish community in Rockland County, New York. During this time, he worked in writing and real estate.
Returning to Acting
Steven Hill returned to acting in the 1970s. He appeared in the Abby Mann miniseries "King" (1978). This show was based on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr..
The 1980s were a very busy time for Hill. He acted in many movies, including:

Law & Order Role
Steven Hill's most famous role was playing District Attorney Adam Schiff in the NBC TV series Law & Order. He played this important character for 230 episodes, from 1990 to 2000.
In 2011, he made a special guest appearance in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
For his work on Law & Order, Hill was nominated for an Emmy Award in both 1998 and 1999. An Emmy is a very important award for television shows.
Later Life and Passing
Steven Hill passed away in Monsey, New York, on August 23, 2016. He was 94 years old and died from cancer.
