Peter's family had roots from Norway, Germany, and England. He chose the stage name "Graves" from his mother's family. This was to honor her side of the family. It also helped avoid confusion with his older brother, James Arness. James was already famous as the star of the TV show Gunsmoke.
Graves finished high school in 1944. He then joined the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He served from 1944 to 1945 and reached the rank of corporal. He received two medals for his service: the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war, Graves went to the University of Minnesota.

Comedy Roles and Return to Mission: Impossible
