Steven Paul Logan, born on December 23, 1965, is an American lawyer and judge. He currently serves as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Arizona. Before this important role, he was a United States magistrate judge in the same court.
Education and Military Service
Judge Logan is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He served for 23 years and retired with the rank of Colonel. During his time in the Marines, he worked at the Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals.
He was deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. He also spent six years as a military trial judge. For his second tour in Iraq, he received two special awards: the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Judge Logan earned his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the University of Louisville in 1988. He then received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, which is a law degree, in 1992 from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
Legal Career Highlights
From 1999 to 2010, Steven Logan worked as an assistant United States attorney for the United States Department of Justice. In this role, he was a federal prosecutor. He focused on stopping large-scale illegal activities, including those that crossed national borders.
From 2010 to 2012, he served as a United States immigration judge in Arizona. In this position, he made decisions about immigration cases. After that, from January 2012 until May 16, 2014, he was a United States magistrate judge in the District of Arizona.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On September 19, 2013, President Barack Obama chose Steven Logan to become a United States district judge. This nomination was made after President Obama talked with Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake.
On January 27, 2014, Judge Logan had a hearing in Washington, D.C. The United States Senate held this hearing to decide if he was a good fit for the judge position. On February 27, 2014, a Senate committee approved his nomination.
The Senate then voted on his nomination. On May 14, 2014, the Senate confirmed him as a judge with a 96–0 vote. Judge Logan officially received his judicial commission on May 16, 2014. This means he officially became a federal judge on that date.
