History of Stevenson
Stevenson is named after an early settler named George H. Stevenson. His family moved to the Columbia River Gorge from Missouri in the 1800s. They started the town on land that used to be a farm.
In 1893, George Stevenson bought the land where the town now stands for $24,000. He built the town on the flat area near the river. Settlers made the dock bigger so that steamboats could easily unload people and goods, and load logs.
Also in 1893, Stevenson became the county seat for Skamania County. This happened suddenly when county records were moved there from another town. Stevenson officially became a city on December 16, 1907.
In 1908, a railway called the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway arrived. This caused the town to grow up the hill, away from the river. Streets were built, wooden sidewalks were added, and the city even asked people to keep their cows off the streets!
