Stevinson is a small community in Merced County, California. It is not an official city, but a "census-designated place." This means it's an area the government defines for counting people. Stevinson is about 21 miles west of the city of Merced. It sits at an elevation of 85 feet above sea level. In 2020, about 275 people lived there.
The community got its name from James J. Stevinson. He bought land in the area way back in 1852. The Stevinson post office first opened in 1907.
Stevinson is well-known for its bullring. Here, you can often see Portuguese bullfighting. This type of bullfighting is different from Spanish bullfighting. It focuses more on skill and tradition, and the bull is not harmed. This bullring is one of several in California's Central Valley that are kept by the Portuguese-American community.
During World War II, the US Army built the Howard Auxiliary Field near Stevinson. This airfield was used from 1942 to 1944. It helped train pilots for the war.
