Storm Mountain is a tall mountain located in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, Canada. It stands at an impressive height of 3,095 meters (about 10,154 feet) above sea level. This mountain is a popular spot for scrambling, which is a mix of hiking and easy climbing.
You can find Storm Mountain right next to Highway 40. It's southwest of the Highwood Pass parking lot in an area called Kananaskis Country. It's part of the Misty Range within the Canadian Rockies. You can easily spot it as the highest peak between Mount Arethusa and Mist Mountain at the very south end of the Misty Range.
Why is it Called Storm Mountain?
The name "Storm Mountain" was given by a person named George Mercer Dawson in 1884. He named it because he often saw storm clouds gathering around its top. It's like the mountain was always attracting the weather!
The Other Storm Mountain
It's a bit unusual, but George Mercer Dawson actually named another mountain "Storm Mountain" too! This second mountain is about 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) away from the first one. It sits on the continental divide, which is the line that separates Alberta and British Columbia. It also marks the border between Banff National Park and Kootenay National Park.
It's quite rare for two mountains so close to each other to have the exact same name, especially when they were named by the same person!
