Stormworld is an exciting TV show from Australia and Canada. It's a science fiction drama that first aired in 2009. The story is about two boys who get transported to a strange alien world.
The show follows Jason (played by Andrew Jenkins) and Lee (Calum Worthy). They are on a boat trip from Vancouver, Canada, when they suddenly get pulled into a vortex. This vortex takes them to an alien planet called Stormworld.
Stormworld is a very unusual place with three suns! On this new world, the boys meet Flees (Valentina Barron). She is a seasoned survivor who helps them. Flees has a special boat called Stormrider. Jason and Lee are called "access crashers" by the locals because they arrived unexpectedly. They find safety at a place called The Settlement.
Stormworld is a destination for people and objects from many different planets. These things arrive when a vortex opens between Stormworld and another world. Large beetle-like insects create these vortices. Stormworld is mostly a saltwater ocean with many islands. It has a very hot climate. Fresh water is super important and hard to find. Everyone is always looking for it, including a legendary source called the Great Water. People on Stormworld trade and barter items that come through the vortices. This is how their economy works.
Contents
People of Stormworld
There are three main groups of people living on Stormworld. These groups often have conflicts with each other.
The Settlement Community
The Settlement is a society based on a constitution and democratic ideas. This means they have rules and people vote on things. It's located on an island at a place called the Sighing Peaks. A person named Werrolda founded The Settlement and wrote its rules. When Jason and Lee arrive, Werrolda is the leader. There's a beacon on a hill near The Settlement. It flashes a bright light to attract other "access crashers" who arrive through vortices.
The Arkoddians
The Arkoddians are a society with a strict hierarchy. This means they have a clear chain of command, led by patriarchs. They live on an island far from The Settlement. Arkoddians need more water each day than humans do. Some Arkoddians carry weapons called lazbolts. Unlike most others, the Arkoddians seem to have arrived on Stormworld as a large group on a big boat.
The Drogue Gang
The Drogue are a small group of tough people who often bother The Settlement. They also collect items that come through the vortices. They use flybikes, which are like flying motorcycles. These flybikes have energy cannons.
The Abiders: An Ancient Race
The Abiders were a group of people who lived on Stormworld a long time ago. They created the Sighing Peaks, which might have been a map. They also likely built the portal that allows people to leave the planet.
Stormworld's Unique Geography
Stormworld is very different from Earth. The most noticeable difference is its three suns: a yellow sun, a blue sun, and a red sun. These suns greatly affect the planet's land, plants, and animals. Because of the extra sunlight, Stormworld is very hot. This heat means there isn't much fresh water. Everyone has to be careful with water and save it. The lack of water also means there are fewer plants or animals for food.
Stormworld has its own native plants and animals that people eat. However, a lot of the food comes to Stormworld through the vortices. The people at The Settlement also grow a small garden to help feed themselves. The Arkoddians mostly eat a type of seaweed. The Drogue just take food from others or find what they can from the vortices.
A day on Stormworld lasts 30 hours.
When only the red sun is in the sky, a plant called Blood Kelp becomes dangerous. This kelp can crawl onto boats and shores to try and eat people. Once the yellow sun rises, the Blood Kelp goes back into the ocean.
There are also several natural dangers on Stormworld: vortices, winders, twisters, and mystals.
Vortices: Portals to Other Worlds
Vortices connect Stormworld to other planets. They pull people and objects to Stormworld. It's dangerous to be near a vortex because objects come through with great force. Large beetle-like insects, about 20 cm by 10 cm, start each vortex when they swarm together. The vortex ends when the insects scatter. Vortices usually last a few minutes and move with the insect swarm. The insects swarm after they are excited by mystals.
Winders: Electric Threads
Winders look like horizontal lightning that can move across the land. Each winder is made of several electric threads. They are very deadly. However, the Arkoddians have learned how to handle them using grounding rods. Winders are attracted to mental activity.
Twisters: Dehydrating Tornadoes
Twisters are small, fast-moving tornadoes that move over land. One or more can appear at the same time. A twister is made of extremely dry air. It removes all water from anyone it touches. People become completely dehydrated so quickly that their bodies turn to dust.
Mystals: Dangerous Fog
Mystals appear as sparkling, slow-moving fog. They are full of energy. If you touch a mystal, it can make you mentally unwell or even kill you. Mystals cannot affect someone who is underwater.
Important Equipment
- Cougar – This is the boat Jason and Lee arrived on. The Drogue quickly steal it from them.
- Stormrider – This is a special boat owned and captained by Flees. She and her father built it using parts from their airplane and other scavenged materials. The Stormrider is unique because it can also go underwater like a submarine. It's tricky to pilot because it's made from so many different parts.
- Valigant – This is the boat Khelioz uses. It seems to get its power by collecting electromagnetic energy. It works similarly to The Settlement's beacon.
- Lazbolts – These are the weapons used by the Arkoddians. Lazbolts shoot deadly energy bolts. They look like spears with large shells on the ends. Even though they are deadly, they aren't always accurate.
- Flybikes – These are flying, motorcycle-like vehicles used by the Drogue. They use them to raid for water, food, and materials. Flybikes have weapons called Stun Bolts that can stun or kill people. The Stun Bolts are very accurate.
Main Characters
Stormworld has many characters, but the main story often focuses on Jason, Lee, Flees, Ogee, and Khelioz.
- Jason (Andrew Jenkins) – He's energetic, positive, and a natural leader. Lee is his best friend, and they both arrived on Stormworld from Earth at the same time. Jason was the pilot of the Cougar boat. In the last episode, he decides to stay on Stormworld with Flees and Ogee and become the leader of The Settlement.
- Lee (Calum Worthy) – He is smart, clever, and thinks logically, with a strong scientific mind. He arrived on Stormworld with Jason. Lee really wants to go back to Earth, and he does in episode 26.
- Flees (Valentina Barron) – She arrived on Stormworld seven years ago with her father, who was an engineer. Their small airplane was pulled through a vortex from Earth. Flees' father disappeared four years after they arrived when he went kayaking. Now 15, Flees has been searching for him for three years. Her search has given her excellent knowledge of Stormworld's geography. Luce looks up to Flees like an older sister.
- Khelioz (Lim Kay Tong) – Also known as The Navigator. He was a fisherman on his home world, Maren. On Stormworld, he is a trader with a small sailing boat. He tries to gather information to find the portal that lets people return to their home planets. People sometimes see his methods as sneaky or selfish.
- Ogee (Andrew Kavadas) – He is an alien who looks like a large glowing ball. On his home planet, Apotheosia, which has lower gravity, his normal form is much larger. Ogee is very intelligent but can't move easily on Stormworld. He mostly relies on Flees for transportation. He talks a lot and loves to show off how smart he is.
- Werrolda (Michelle Fornasier) – She is the leader and founder of The Settlement. On her home world, she was a teacher in a society with strict social classes. Before coming to Stormworld, she had ideas about different ways to organize society. She put these ideas into practice when she arrived on Stormworld. Werrolda founded The Settlement at the Sighing Peaks because she believes The Abiders created them.
- Luce (Chelsea Jones) – A young, strong-willed girl from The Settlement. She arrived on Stormworld when she was very young and was raised by Werrolda.
- Makyn (Kazimir Sas) – A cunning and tricky person who uses situations to his advantage. He becomes Werrolda's deputy at The Settlement. He came from his home world, Waxon, as the third son of a powerful political family. In the final episode, he is pushed through the portal. But because he was holding a lazbolt, he is sent to Arkoddia instead. This displacement causes the portal to be destroyed.
- Hintor (Steve Turner) – A practical but not very imaginative member of The Settlement. He thinks that Werrolda's flexible rules and open-door policy for new "access crashers" put the community at risk. He is the first to challenge Werrolda's leadership.
- Gundril (Amanda Woodhams) – A young woman from the planet Lefar. She lives alone on one of the smaller, remote islands that Flees calls Luce Island.
- Gol Hati (Lilanthi Weddikkara) – The leader of the Drogue. She arrived from her home world, Caramei, with the other Drogue members and their advanced flybikes. She is a tough leader who believes all other people are not as good as her group.
- Vassler (Adam Sollis) – A young Arkoddian who was born on Stormworld. He speaks his mind, which is unusual for an Arkoddian. He is also more open-minded than most Arkoddians. He becomes friends with Jason, Lee, Flees, and Ogee.
- Voss (George Shevtsov) – The patriarch (leader) of the Arkoddians. He is very strict and set in his ways. He is used to having power and doesn't like change. He has a strong dislike for non-Arkoddians.
