A Look Back at Stretton's History

In the early 1800s, the area that is now Stretton was part of a much larger region. This region was known as Coopers Plains. In 1861, the Governor of Queensland, Governor Bowen, set aside a big area. This area stretched from Eight Mile Plains all the way to Stretton. It was called the Brisbane Agricultural Reserve.

Farming and Early Settlers

At first, this reserve was used for getting timber. But people soon found out that the land was great for farming. Settlers quickly started farms here. They grew popular fruits and vegetables. They also raised poultry, like chickens.

How Stretton Got Its Name

A military map from 1922 showed only four houses in the area. Stretton officially became a suburb of Brisbane in 1972. It was named after George Stretton. He was an early settler, a postmaster, and ran a hotel in Browns Plains in the 1870s.
