Strängnäs Municipality (Strängnäs kommun) is a special area in Sweden. It is located in Södermanland County, in the eastern part of the country. This municipality is right by Lake Mälaren, which is a large lake. The main town, or "seat," of the municipality is Strängnäs.

The municipality we see today was formed in 1971. Before that, there were 15 smaller local areas. These areas joined together to create the larger Strängnäs Municipality. This included the old cities of Strängnäs and Mariefred.

History of Strängnäs Municipality

Strängnäs is a very old town. Its history goes all the way back to the Viking Age. Because it is located on the shores of Lake Mälaren, Strängnäs has always been an important place. People came here to trade goods and meet up.

Mariefred's Past

The town of Mariefred got its name from a monastery called Pax Mariae. This means "Mary's Peace." It was started about 500 years ago by a person named Sten Sture the Elder. Today, you won't see any parts of the old monastery above ground. The church of Mariefred, built in 1624, now stands where the monastery used to be.
