Sulaiman Mountains facts for kids
The Sulaiman Mountains, also known as the Kesai Mountains, are a large mountain range. They are found in southeastern Afghanistan and northern Balochistan province in Pakistan. These mountains act like a natural wall. They stand between the Iranian Plateau and South Asia.
The Sulaiman Mountains are important for the weather in the region. They block the moist winds that come from the Indian Ocean. This makes the areas north of the mountains, like southern Afghanistan, very dry. To the east and south of the mountains is the Indus River Delta. This area is flat and often gets heavy flooding.
Where Are the Sulaiman Mountains?
These mountains stretch across several areas. In Afghanistan, they are in Zabul, much of Loya Paktia, and northeastern Kandahar province. In Pakistan, they cover South Waziristan and most of northern Balochistan.
To the north of the Sulaiman Range are the dry, high lands of the Hindu Kush Range. More than half of the land there is higher than 2,000 meters (6,500 feet).
Rivers Flowing from the Mountains
Several rivers start in the Sulaiman mountain system. Two of these rivers are the Dori River and the Gomal River. These rivers carry water from the mountains to other areas.
Plants and Nature
The plant life in the Sulaiman Mountains changes depending on the area. The southern slopes have very few plants growing.
In the central parts of the mountains, you can find more greenery. Here, there are wild olives and pistachio trees. You can also see orchards with apples and cherries. Wild almonds and juniper trees also grow in this region.
Ziarat District is a popular place for visitors. It is famous for its very large juniper forests. People enjoy visiting this area to see the beautiful nature.
