Sulligent is a city located in Lamar County, Alabama, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,879 people lived there. Back in 2000, it was the biggest town in Lamar County. The city's name comes from people who worked for the railroad.

History of Sulligent
Sulligent was first named Elliott. This was to honor the chief engineer of the Kansas City-Memphis-Birmingham Railroad. A month later, the name changed to Sulligent. This new name combined the names of two railroad workers: Sullivan, the superintendent, and Sargeant, the passenger agent. The town officially became a city on February 12, 1897. The first general store was owned by S. F. Pennington. Dr. R. J. Redden opened the first drug store.
Cotton Industry in Sulligent
Growing and processing cotton was a very important business in Sulligent. In the mid-1890s, cotton was the main product. Over 2,500 bales of cotton were processed each year. These bales were then shipped out by train. At one point, the Sulligent Cotton Oil Company was famous. It was known for having the largest cotton gin under one roof.
Historic Buildings
Sulligent is home to a special building called the Greer Bankhead House. This house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very important historical site. The house was built almost 40 years before Sulligent became a city.
Another old house, The Ogden House, was built in 1888. It was the first home built inside Sulligent. William W. Ogden, who owned the Sulligent Cotton Oil Company, lived there. He was also a banker and served as mayor of Sulligent. Later, his daughter, Leila Ogden, gave the house to the city in 1975. It became the public library until the late 1990s. Sadly, in 2023, the city decided to tear down The Ogden House instead of fixing it up.
Famous People from Sulligent
Sulligent has been home to several famous athletes and politicians.
- James McKinney and Joe Cribbs: These cousins were both great football players at Auburn University. James McKinney was the first African American football player from Auburn to be named first-team All-SEC. Joe Cribbs was a top college player and later became an All-Pro NFL running back.
- Rashad Johnson: He was an All-American safety at the University of Alabama. He also played in the NFL.
- Bubba Harris and Sam Bankhead: Bubba Harris played Major League Baseball. Sam Bankhead played in the Negro leagues.
- John H. Bankhead: He grew up in Sulligent. He was an officer in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Later, he became a U.S. Senator for Alabama.

Sulligent is located at 33°53′41″N 88°7′55″W / 33.89472°N 88.13194°W. The city covers a total area of about 7.8 square miles (20.29 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
U.S. Route 278 and State Route 17 both pass through Sulligent. They meet in the center of town. The BNSF Railway also provides train service to the city. Its tracks run from east to west.
