Summertown is a small community in Lawrence County, Tennessee, United States. It's not an official city but a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's an area the government counts for population surveys. In 2020, about 856 people lived there. Summertown has its own ZIP Code, which is 38483. Some people living in nearby Lewis and Maury counties also use a Summertown mailing address, even though they are not part of the CDP.

Where is Summertown Located?

Summertown is in the northeastern part of Lawrence County. It shares borders with Lewis County to the north and Maury County to the northeast. Tennessee State Route 20 goes right through the middle of Summertown. This road can take you east to U.S. Route 43 or northwest to Hohenwald. US-43 goes south to Lawrenceburg, which is the main town of Lawrence County, and northeast to Columbia.

The area of Summertown is about 5.2 square kilometers (or 2.01 square miles), and it's all land. Water from the North and South Forks of Saw Creek flows through the community. These creeks eventually lead to the Buffalo River, then to the Duck River, and finally to the big Tennessee River.

Tornadoes in the Area

Summertown has seen a bit more tornado activity than the average for Tennessee. It's even 108% higher than the average for the whole U.S.

On May 18, 1995, a very strong tornado, called an F-4, hit about a mile from Summertown. Its winds were super fast, between 207 and 260 miles per hour. Sadly, 3 people lost their lives, and 32 people were hurt. It also caused a lot of damage, costing between $500,000 and $5,000,000.

Then, on April 16, 1998, an even stronger tornado, an F-5, hit right on Highway 43 in Summertown. This tornado had winds between 261 and 318 miles per hour. It also caused 3 deaths and injured 36 people. The damage from this storm was very high, about $13 million.

While there have been other tornadoes in Summertown, these two were the most impactful.
