Summit Lake is a small, interesting lake located in the Algoma District of Ontario, Canada. It's a special place because it's the very beginning of a long journey for water! This lake is the source of the Kabinakagami River, which eventually flows all the way to James Bay.

Exploring Summit Lake

Summit Lake is part of the huge James Bay drainage basin. This means all the water from the lake eventually makes its way to James Bay, which is a large body of water connected to Hudson Bay.

Where is Summit Lake?

You can find Summit Lake in the unorganized northern part of the Algoma District. This area is in northeastern Ontario. The lake is about 1.0 kilometre (0.6 mi) long and 0.2 kilometres (0.1 mi) wide. It sits at a high elevation of about 442 metres (1,450 ft) above sea level. Interestingly, no big rivers or streams flow into Summit Lake; it's mainly fed by rain and snow.

The Kabinakagami River Connection

The most important feature of Summit Lake is that it's the starting point for the Kabinakagami River. This river is like the first step in a long water relay race! From the Kabinakagami River, the water flows into the Kenogami River, then into the Albany River, and finally reaches James Bay. It's a long journey across Canada!

A Railway Runs By

Summit Lake is also known for its connection to the Canadian Pacific Railway. The main railway line, which crosses Canada, runs right along the entire southern shore of the lake. This railway is used by the Via Rail Sudbury – White River train service, carrying passengers through this beautiful area.

The lake is located between two railway stops: Amyot to the west and Girdwood to the east. If you were traveling by train, you'd pass right by Summit Lake! It's also about 32 kilometres (20 mi) southeast of the town of White River and 27 kilometres (17 mi) northeast of Dubreuilville.
