Super Bowl Sunday, also known as Super Sunday, is the day when the Super Bowl takes place. The Super Bowl is the big championship game for the National Football League (NFL). Many people think of it as an unofficial national holiday in the United States.
For a long time, Super Bowl Sunday happened on the first Sunday in February. This was true until Super Bowl LV in 2021. But starting with Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the game now happens on the second Sunday in February. People often get together with friends and family to watch the game. Both "Super Sunday" and "Super Bowl Sunday" are official names owned by the NFL. In places like Guam, where it's already Monday when the game starts, it's called "Super Bowl Monday."
How People Celebrate Super Bowl Sunday
Even though Super Bowl Sunday isn't an official holiday, it's a huge event. Many families and friends gather to watch the game. This includes people who don't usually follow football. In the past, many people went to sports bars to watch. But now, more and more people prefer to watch the game at home. This is partly because home TVs are getting bigger. Also, people can save money by staying home.
Because so many people watch the Super Bowl, stores are often very quiet during the game. This is especially true in the areas where the two teams playing are from. Even water usage changes during the game! It drops a lot, then goes up during halftime and after the game. This happens as fans take bathroom breaks. Some churches might even change their afternoon or evening services on Super Bowl Sunday. They might also hold football-themed charity events.
The NFL has even suggested making Super Bowl Monday a holiday. This would let fans celebrate the event more. Some people believe that work productivity goes down the Monday after the game. The TV channel showing the game, like CBS, Fox, ABC, or NBC, usually dedicates the whole day to it. They show long pre-game shows and look back at the past season. Other TV channels often show fun, low-cost programs. A popular example is the Puppy Bowl, which shows puppies playing.
After the NFL season ends, other football leagues sometimes start their seasons right after Super Bowl Sunday. This helps them get attention from football fans who want more games. Examples include the Arena Football League and the XFL.
Super Bowl Food Traditions
A lot of food is eaten on Super Bowl Sunday! It's the second-biggest day for food eating in the United States. Only Thanksgiving dinner involves more food.
Super Bowl food is usually served buffet style. This means people can pick what they want. Traditional foods include buffalo wings, chili, baby back ribs, dipping sauces, pizza, and potato chips. Pizza delivery places get twice as many orders on Super Bowl Sunday. About 60 percent of all takeout food ordered that day is pizza. People eat huge amounts of snacks. For example, about 28 million pounds of chips and 1.25 billion chicken wings are eaten! Also, around 8 million pounds of guacamole are consumed during Super Bowl Sunday.
