Surprise Valley is a long valley in northeastern California. It stretches about 60 miles from north to south. People who live there often call it the Tricorner Region. This is because it is located where the state lines of California, Oregon, and Nevada meet. The valley is east of Alturas, which is the main town in Modoc County. It is also part of a larger dry area called the Great Basin.

Exploring Surprise Valley's Unique Landscape

Surprise Valley is a high-altitude desert valley. Most of it is more than 4,000 feet above sea level. You can find a series of salty lakes in the lower parts of the valley. These are called alkali lakes.

Mountains and Desert Features

Tall, forested mountains stand on the west side of the valley. These are the Warner Mountains. To the east, you will find the Hays Canyon Range. This range is mostly in Nevada. The valley is part of the Great Basin. This large desert region covers most of Nevada. It also reaches into parts of Utah, southeast Oregon, and eastern southern California.
