Early History: Muisca People

Long ago, when Spanish explorers arrived in the central highlands of the Colombian Andes mountains, they found a group of people called the Muisca. These people had their own country, known as the Muisca Confederation.

Susacón was once led by a local chief, called a cacique. This chief was loyal to the cacique of a nearby town called Soatá. The cacique of Susacón even took part in an important battle against the Spanish. This battle was called the Battle of Bonza.

When Was Susacón Founded?

Even though Spanish missionaries came to the area in 1556, the town of Susacón was officially started much later. It was founded on December 18, 1809.

The name Susacón comes from the Chibcha language. It means "ally of the cacique Susa."
