What Does the Name Boavita Mean?
The name "Boavita" comes from the ancient Chibcha language. It doesn't mean "good life" as some might think. Instead, its true meaning is "Point on the hill worshipping the Sun" or "Gate of the Sun." This shows how important the sun was to the people who lived here long ago.
A Glimpse into Boavita's Past
Long before the Spanish arrived, the area where Boavita is today was home to a group of people called the "Guavitas." They were part of the Laches and Muisca tribes. These tribes had their own leaders, called caciques. The local cacique of the Guavitas was loyal to a powerful leader known as the Tundama from Duitama.
Modern Boavita was officially founded on February 9, 1613. It was established by a person named Sr. Hugarte. This date marks the beginning of the town as we know it today.
