Sutopo Purwo Nugroho (born October 7, 1969 – died July 7, 2019) was a very important Indonesian public servant. He was known for his work at the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB). He was the head of public relations, which meant he shared information with everyone during disasters.

Sutopo went to Gadjah Mada University and Bogor Agricultural Institute. He started working for the Indonesian government in 1994. Later, in 2010, he began his important role in public relations for disaster management.

Early Life and Education

Sutopo was born in Boyolali, Central Java, on October 7, 1969. He was the first child of Suharsono Harsosaputro and Sri Roosmandari. His father worked as a teacher.

Sutopo went to elementary, middle, and high schools in his hometown. He studied Geography at Gadjah Mada University. He graduated in 1993 as the best student that year. Later, he earned his master's degree and PhD in hydrology. This field studies how water moves on Earth. He focused on the carbon cycle and climate change.

Career in Disaster Management

After finishing his studies, Sutopo started working for the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) in 1994. There, he worked on projects like cloud seeding, which helps make rain. He became a very high-ranking researcher.

Sutopo later joined the BNPB in August 2010. At first, he helped manage risks from disasters. During his first few months, there were big events like floods in West Papua. There was also an earthquake and tsunami in Mentawai. The Mount Merapi volcano also erupted.

He became the Head of Data Center, Information and Public Relations in November 2010. This job meant he was the main person to share news about disasters. He became famous for how well he communicated during emergencies.

A Voice for the People

Sutopo was very active on social media during disasters. The Guardian newspaper called him "something of a social media celebrity." The Straits Times said he was "the single most-quoted Indonesian official in the news during any disaster." He used social media to give quick and clear updates.

For his hard work, he received a "Public Campaigner Award" in 2014. In 2018, The Straits Times named him one of the "Asians of the Year." This award recognized him and other "First Responders" for their disaster management efforts.

Sutopo often spoke out about important issues. After the 2018 Sunda Strait tsunami, he said that Indonesia's tsunami early warning system needed to be much better. He believed it was "still far from satisfactory." He also taught at several universities. These included Bogor Agricultural Institute and University of Indonesia.

Personal Life

Sutopo was married to Retno Utami Yulianingsih. They had four children together.

Illness and Dedication

In 2018, Sutopo shared that he had lung cancer. It was in an advanced stage. Even though he was getting treatment and needed to rest, he kept working. He continued to use social media to give updates during big events. These included the sinking of a ferry and the Lombok earthquakes.

His dedication showed how much he cared about helping people. In June 2019, he went to Guangzhou, China, for more treatment. He sadly passed away there on July 7, 2019. His body was brought back home. He was buried in his hometown of Boyolali the next day.
