A Look Back: History of Swanscombe and Greenhithe
How Swanscombe Became a Town
Swanscombe was a very old parish in Kent. A "parish" is like a local area with its own church and local rules. In 1894, a local council was set up for Swanscombe. This was called the Swanscombe Parish Council.
Later, in 1926, Swanscombe became an "urban district." This meant it had more control over its own local services. But this urban district was ended in 1974. The parish council was then formed again.
In 1981, the Swanscombe Parish Council decided to become a "town council." This was a big step! It meant the area was now officially a town. It was renamed Swanscombe and Greenhithe. For the first time, the town could elect its own mayor.
