Sylvan Lake is a fun, all-sports lake in Oakland County, Michigan. It covers about 458 acres. This lake is part of the main branch of the Clinton River.
North of Sylvan Lake is Otter Lake, which is 74 acres. Together, these two lakes create a large area of 532 acres. This makes them the seventh biggest lake area in Oakland County.
Sylvan Lake is located near the cities of Sylvan Lake, Keego Harbor, Michigan, and Waterford Township. It is west of Pontiac, Michigan. You can find it north of Orchard Lake Road and south of Voorhies Road. It is also east of Cass Lake Road and west of Telegraph Road.
Sylvan Lake connects to Crystal Lake, which is 12 acres. It also connects upstream to Cass Lake, which is 1,280 acres. There is a dam between Sylvan Lake and Cass Lake at Cass Lake Road.
What's in a Name? The History of Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake was not always known by its current name. Long ago, it was actually two separate lakes. The northern part was called Timber Lake. The southern part was known as Pickerel Lake.
Around the early 1900s, these two lakes were combined into one. That is when they were given the new name, Sylvan Lake. The word "Sylvan" means "located in the woods." This name perfectly describes the lake's beautiful surroundings.
Oakland County Boat Club and Lake Traditions
The Oakland County Boat Club has been a part of Sylvan Lake since 1912. This club is a private group that enjoys social events and has a marina for boats. It is a not-for-profit organization.
One of the most exciting traditions at Sylvan Lake is the fireworks display. People have been enjoying fireworks over the lake since the late 1940s. It is a popular event for families and friends.
