About the Sympistis Funebris Moth
This moth is quite small. When its wings are spread out, they measure about 25 to 27 millimeters across. That's about the length of a small paperclip!
Where It Lives
The Sympistis funebris moth likes colder places. It lives in areas like Fennoscandia (which includes countries like Finland, Norway, and Sweden) and the Alps mountains in Europe. You can also find it across northern Russia, all the way through Siberia to Japan. It also makes its home in the northern parts of North America, including Canada.
What It Eats
The young moths, which are called larvae (or caterpillars), enjoy eating certain plants. Their favorite foods include Betula nana, which is a small type of birch tree. They also munch on different kinds of Vaccinium plants. One specific plant they like is Vaccinium uliginosum, also known as bog bilberry or bog blueberry.
Different Types of Sympistis Funebris
Just like there can be different types of dogs or cats, there are also different types of moths within the same species. These are called subspecies. They are very similar but might have small differences depending on where they live.
The Sympistis funebris moth has two main known subspecies:
- Sympistis funebris funebris
- Sympistis funesta cocklei
