Lee Tae-yong (Hangul: 이태용), born on July 1, 1995, is a South Korean artist known as Taeyong. He is a talented rapper, singer, songwriter, and dancer. Taeyong is a leader and member of the popular K-pop group NCT under SM Entertainment. He first joined NCT's sub-unit NCT U in 2016. Later that year, he became the leader of another sub-unit, NCT 127. In 2019, he also joined the supergroup SuperM. Taeyong has helped write over 40 songs in four languages for NCT and his own solo music. He released his first solo album, Shalala, in June 2023, becoming the first NCT member to debut as a solo artist.

About Taeyong's Life and Career
Early Life and Training
Lee Taeyong was born in Seoul, South Korea, on July 1, 1995. He went to the School of Performing Arts Seoul. In 2012, a recruiter from SM Entertainment discovered him on the street. He joined the company after singing the South Korean national anthem for his audition. Before officially debuting, he was part of SM Rookies, a special team for trainees.
In 2014, Taeyong appeared in magazines and on a TV show called Exo 90:2014. He also featured on Red Velvet's song "Be Natural" that year.
Joining NCT and NCT 127
On April 3, 2016, Taeyong became an official member of the boy group NCT. He debuted with NCT's first sub-unit, NCT U, on April 8, with the song "The 7th Sense". He helped write this song.
Later in 2016, Taeyong was announced as the leader of NCT's second sub-unit, NCT 127. They debuted on July 6 with their song "Fire Truck". He co-wrote three songs for their first album, NCT #127. Even though he had no dance background before training, he became the group's main rapper and main dancer.
In 2017, NCT 127 released more music, including the albums Limitless and Cherry Bomb. Taeyong helped write many songs on these albums. He also worked with other SM Entertainment artists on songs like "Around" and "Cure".
NCT 2018 and SuperM Debut
In March 2018, NCT released their first full group album, NCT 2018 Empathy. Taeyong was part of five different NCT units on this album and helped write five songs. He also joined a TV show called Food Diary in May 2018.
Taeyong co-wrote four songs for NCT 127's first studio album, Regular-Irregular. This included their main song "Regular".
In July 2019, Taeyong released his first solo song, "Long Flight," which he wrote and helped compose. It was a popular song, reaching number six on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. On August 8, 2019, Taeyong was announced as a member of SuperM. This was a new K-pop supergroup formed by SM Entertainment and Capitol Records. SuperM released their first album, SuperM, in October 2019. Taeyong co-wrote and co-produced the song "No Manners" for this album. He also sang with Punch for the TV show Hotel del Luna soundtrack.
In March 2020, NCT 127 released their second studio album, Neo Zone. Taeyong helped write three songs for it. The album was very successful, selling over one million copies. Later in 2020, SuperM released their first studio album, Super One. Taeyong co-wrote the song "Together At Home". In September 2020, Taeyong was confirmed as the leader of NCT as a whole group.
Solo Music and Activities
In March 2021, Taeyong started his own SoundCloud account. He released many demo songs there, including "Dark Clouds," "Blue," "Monroe" (with Baekhyun from Exo), and "Rose" (with Seulgi from Red Velvet). "Dark Clouds" won an award for having the most fan comments on SoundCloud in 2021.
Taeyong was a judge on the dance reality show Street Woman Fighter in August 2021. He also appeared as a guest judge on its spin-off, Street Dance Girls Fighter. He co-wrote the main song for NCT 127's third album, Sticker, which became a best-selling album.
In March 2022, Taeyong was featured on Suran's song "Diamond". He also opened his YouTube channel, TY Track, where he shared performance videos for his songs "Lonely" and "Ghost". On April 14, Taeyong released his official second solo song, "Love Theory," with Wonstein. He also became the host for another dance reality show, Any Body Can Dance, in June 2022.
Taeyong made his official solo debut with his album Shalala in June 2023. This made him the first NCT member to release a solo album. In February 2024, after his first solo concert, Taeyong released his second album, Tap. He wrote all the songs on this album. Tap reached number one on the iTunes Top Albums Chart in 33 countries.
Personal Life and Military Service
In 2018, it was shared that Taeyong is a third cousin of the celebrity Hong Seok-cheon.
Military Service
On March 18, 2024, SM Entertainment announced that Taeyong would begin his mandatory military service in the navy on April 15, 2024. He is the first NCT member to complete South Korea's required military service. He is expected to finish his service in December 2025.
Brand Partnerships
In 2023, the Spanish luxury brand Loewe chose Taeyong as their new global ambassador. He appeared in their Spring 2024 Pre-collection Campaign and was the face of their Loewe Paula's Ibiza Cosmic EDP fragrance campaign in April 2024. In June 2024, Taeyong was featured on the cover of Singles Magazine as the newest brand ambassador for Benefit Cosmetics Korea.
