The tailless tenrec (Tenrec ecaudatus) is a unique mammal found mainly on the island of Madagascar. It's also known as the common tenrec. This animal is the only species in its group, called the genus Tenrec. Even though its name suggests it has no tail, it actually has a very small one!

Discovering the Tailless Tenrec

The tailless tenrec is a fascinating creature. It belongs to a family of mammals called Tenrecidae. These animals are special because they are only found in certain parts of the world. The tailless tenrec was first described in 1778 by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber.

Where Do Tailless Tenrecs Live?

Tailless tenrecs are native to Madagascar, a large island off the coast of Africa. But you can also find them on other nearby islands. These include the Comoros, Mauritius, Réunion, and Seychelles. They were brought to these islands on purpose a long time ago.

They are very adaptable and can live in many different places. Their homes include tropical forests, open woodlands, and dry shrub-lands. You might also find them in grassy areas called savannas. They even live near people, in farms, gardens, and city parks!

What Do Tailless Tenrecs Look Like?

The tailless tenrec is the biggest member of the tenrec family. It can grow to be about 26 to 39 centimeters (10 to 15 inches) long. It can weigh up to 2 kilograms (about 4.4 pounds).

They have thick fur that can be grey or reddish-grey. They also have long, sharp spines all over their body. These spines help protect them from danger. Even though they are called "tailless," they do have a tiny tail. It's only about 1 to 1.5 centimeters (0.4 to 0.6 inches) long.

What Do Tailless Tenrecs Eat?

Tailless tenrecs are omnivores. This means they eat both plants and animals. They have small, sharp teeth that are perfect for their diet.

They love to eat larger invertebrates like insects and worms. They also hunt small animals such as frogs, reptiles, and even mice. Besides meat, they enjoy fruits, leaves, and other plant parts.

How Do Tailless Tenrecs Protect Themselves?

When a tailless tenrec feels threatened, it has some cool ways to defend itself. It might let out a loud scream to scare off predators. It can also make its spiny hairs stand up, forming a crest.

If that doesn't work, it might jump, buck, or even bite! During the day, they like to hide. They build nests of grass and leaves under rocks, logs, or bushes. This keeps them safe and hidden while they rest.

Tailless Tenrec Babies!

Tailless tenrecs are known for having very large families! After about 50 to 60 days, a mother tenrec can give birth to many babies. The average litter size is between 15 and 20 young. But sometimes, they can have as many as 32 babies at once!

When they are born, the young tenrecs look different from their parents. They have a cool black-and-white striped pattern.

Long Sleepers: Tenrec Hibernation

The tailless tenrec holds a special record. It was the first tropical mammal ever seen to hibernate. Hibernation is like a very long, deep sleep. Animals do this to save energy when food is scarce or the weather is bad.

Tailless tenrecs can hibernate for a very long time. They can sleep for up to nine months without waking up! This helps them survive through tough conditions.
