History of Tannymorel
The name Tannymorel comes from a village in Ireland. It means a bend in the creek. Two men from Scotland, Patrick Leslie and Ernest Dalrymple, gave the town its name.
Schools in Tannymorel
The first school in the area was Farm Creek Provisional School. It opened in May 1877. Mrs Fanny Spencely was its first teacher. On 18 January 1892, it became Farm Creek State School. In 1910, its name changed to Tannymorel State School.
A new school building was built in 1914-1915. The old building was moved to Mount Colliery to start a new school there. Tannymorel State School closed on 20 July 2017. The school was located at 2 Oak Street.
Railways and Transport
The railway line from Warwick to Killarney reached Tannymorel on 24 August 1885. The town had its own station called Tannymorel railway station. Another station, Grayson railway station, was south-east of the town.
A private tramway, about 5 kilometers long, opened in 1908. This tramway used horses to pull coal from a nearby mine to the railway line at Tannymorel. Both the Killarney railway line and the coal tramway closed on 1 May 1964.

Several churches were built in Tannymorel over the years.
Methodist Church
A Methodist church opened on Sunday 12 October 1902. Reverend Edward Youngman led the opening ceremony. This church building was later moved twice. In 1919, it went to Amiens. Then, in 1945, it moved to Severnlea. Today, it is known as the Severnlea Uniting Church.
Another Methodist church from Mount Colliery was moved to 15 Oak Street, Tannymorel. It is now used as a private home.
Presbyterian Church
A Presbyterian church officially opened on Wednesday 22 June 1904. Reverend R.J. Sinclair led the ceremony.
Church of Christ
A Church of Christ was built around July 1910. Because fewer people attended, the church closed. In 1950, the building was moved to Myall Street in Dalby to start a new church there.
Anglican Church
St Aidan's Anglican Church was opened on Sunday 28 February 1915 by Archbishop St Clair Donaldson. The last regular service was held at Christmas 2010. The church officially closed in 2012. The building at 11 Oak Street was sold to a private owner in June 2013.
Catholic Church
On Sunday 25 April 1915, Archbishop James Duhig laid the first stone for a Catholic church in Tannymorel. Over 2,000 people came to watch. On Sunday 10 October 1915, Archbishop Duhig blessed and opened St Michael's Catholic Church. The church was quite large, costing £1250 to build and furnish.
In December 1915, a strong storm damaged both the Anglican and Catholic churches.
Tannymorel War Memorial
On Tuesday 7 February 1922, the Governor of Queensland, Matthew Nathan, officially revealed the Tannymorel War Memorial. This memorial is made of sandstone. It is 4 feet wide at the bottom and stands 15 feet tall.
The memorial has four marble panels. One panel lists the names of 60 local servicemen who died in World War I. The other three panels list the names of those who served but survived the war. The memorial cost £104 to build.
On Sunday 16 November 1947, an addition was made to the memorial. It was an Honour Roll listing 10 men from the area who served in World War II.

- Colin Murray Turbayne was a Professor of Philosophy. He was known for his research on the philosopher George Berkeley.
