Tarinkot, also known as Tarin Kowt, is an important city in south-central Afghanistan. It is the capital city of Uruzgan Province. The city is located 1,317 meters (about 4,321 feet) above sea level. Roads connect Tarinkot to other cities like Kandahar in the south, Nili in Daykundi Province to the north, and Malistan in Ghazni Province to the northeast.

In 2015, about 71,604 people lived in Tarinkot. The area is home to two main groups of Pashtun people. These are the Tareen tribes, which include the Popalzai, Barakzai, Nurzai, and Achakzai. The Ghilzai tribes, like the Tokhi and Hotak, also live here.

Most of the land in the Tarinkot area is not built up. About 67% of the land is used for farming. Homes make up almost half of the built-up areas. The Tarinkot Airport is also within the city limits. It is the second largest built-up area, covering 24% of the developed land.

In August 2021, during the 2021 Taliban offensive, the local Afghan forces gave up control to the Taliban. Tarinkot is still one of the less developed cities in Afghanistan.

History of Tarinkot

Tarinkot has always been a part of the larger Loy Kandahar region. For a long time, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, some leaders of the Tarin Pashtun tribes lived here. Some of these leaders later moved to the Indian subcontinent. This happened around the time of the Mughal-Safavid War (1622-23).

Tarinkot in the 21st Century

On November 16, 2001, groups in Tarinkot stood up against the Taliban. This was the first time Pashtun groups organized to resist the Taliban. Hamid Karzai, who later became president, was in the area. He was trying to create a local fighting group. He had help from a small team of U.S. Special Forces.

The Taliban then attacked, but Karzai and his group defended the town. With help from U.S. air support, they pushed the Taliban back from Tarinkot.

In 2004, an American military base called FOB Ripley was built in Tarinkot. It was named after a U.S. Marine, John Ripley. Different military groups from the U.S. helped set up this base. Later, other foreign military forces also used the base near Tarinkot.

After a big military operation, most of the Taliban fighters moved to the mountains. In August 2006, Dutch troops took over security in southern Afghanistan. They built a new base called Kamp Holland, which later became the Multi National Base Tarin Kot.

Starting in March 2007, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began building a road. This road connected Tarinkot to Deh Rahwod and then to Shahidi Hassas District. At the same time, they also improved the road to Kandahar by paving it and building bridges.

On July 4, 2010, U.S. soldiers took over military operations in Tarinkot and Deh Rahwod. This happened after Dutch forces left the area.

More U.S. soldiers took responsibility for the area in 2011. In September 2016, Taliban fighters threatened Tarinkot. They blocked the main highway and attacked the city itself. In August 2021, during the 2021 Taliban offensive, the Taliban fully captured Tarinkot.
