Tate is a small community in Pickens County, Georgia, United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. The historic area of Tate, known as the Georgia Marble Company and Tate Historic District, is a special place. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's important for its history. This area is found along GA 53, between GA 5 and Long Swamp Creek.

Discovering Tate's Past
Tate has had a few different names over the years. Its first post office was called Marble Works. This name came from the marble industry that was (and still is!) very important here. Later, the area was known as Harnageville. This name honored Ambrose Harnage, an important person in the community.
Early County Government
Ambrose Harnage's home was once a very important place. The Georgia government decided it would be the first meeting spot for courts in Cherokee County. Back then, Cherokee County was a huge area, much larger than it is today.
In 1832, people voted for a full county government. The courts continued to meet at the Harnage house. Later that year, Cherokee County was divided into seven smaller counties. The community was then renamed Tate in 1880. This new name honored Colonel Sam Tate. Other names for the area included Harnages and Tateville.
Famous Georgia Marble
Tate is home to the main quarries of the Georgia Marble Company. This company is now part of Polycor, one of the biggest stone companies in North America. The marble found here is known around the world for its excellent quality.
Transporting the Marble
The quarries use the Georgia Northeastern Railroad to move the marble. This helps get the beautiful stone to places far away. Tate is also close to Interstate 575, which connects to the big city of metro Atlanta. This highway turns into State Route 515 nearby in Nelson. The old State Route 5 used to go right through Tate.
The Historic Tate House
The Tate House is a beautiful old building in Tate. It has a long history and has been used for different things. In the past, it was a restaurant and a bed & breakfast, where people could stay overnight. Today, the Tate House is a popular place for special events. Many weddings and other celebrations happen there.
