Tatebayashi (館林市 (Tatebayashi-shi)) is a city in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. As of February 2024, about 74,027 people live there in 34,486 homes. The city covers an area of 60.97 square kilometers (about 23.54 square miles). This means there are about 1200 people living in each square kilometer.
Tatebayashi is well-known for its beautiful Azalea Hill Park. It is also famous for the story of Bunbuku Chagama from Morin-ji temple.

Tatebayashi is located in the very southeastern part of Gunma Prefecture. It sits on the Kantō Plain, which is a large flat area. To the north, it shares a border with Tochigi Prefecture. The city is surrounded by two important rivers: the Tone River to the north and the Watarase River to the south.

History of Tatebayashi
Tatebayashi has a very long history. People have lived in this area since prehistoric times, going back about 20,000 years! During the Edo period (1603-1868), Tatebayashi was an important castle town. This means it grew up around a castle and was a center for local government. It was part of the Tatebayashi Domain, which was a local area ruled by a feudal lord under the Tokugawa shogunate.
The modern town of Tatebayashi was officially created on April 1, 1889. This happened after the Meiji Restoration, when Japan started to modernize its government. Later, on April 1, 1954, Tatebayashi Town merged with several nearby villages. These villages were Satoya, Ōshima, Akabane, Rokugō, Minoya, Tatara, and Watarase. Together, they formed the city of Tatebayashi.
