Tatworth is a village in Somerset, England. It is about 2 miles (3 km) south of the town of Chard. Tatworth is part of a larger area called Tatworth and Forton civil parish.

Tatworth is a big village made up of several smaller areas. These include South Chard, Perry Street, and Chard Junction. The small area of Forton is just north of Tatworth, closer to Chard.

History of Tatworth

People have lived in the Tatworth area for a very long time. Archeologists found a small stone tile from Roman times here. This tile might be from a Roman villa or farmhouse that once stood near St Margaret's Lane. Parts of this old building were dug up in 1967. Pottery and paving stones found there are now on display at the Chard Museum.

The name Tatworth comes from old English words. Tat means 'cheerful' and worp means 'farm'. So, Tatworth means 'A cheerful farm'. In 1254, the village was called Tattewurthe. It was a smaller part of the Chard area. Later, in 1554, the land was given to a person named William Petre. His family owned Tatworth until 1790. In the 1850s, Tatworth covered about 1,552 acres (6.28 km2) of land. Around 852 people lived there at that time.

How Tatworth is Governed

Tatworth has a local government group called a parish council. This council helps manage things that affect the village directly. For example, they decide on a local tax to pay for village services. They also check plans for new buildings in the area. The council works with the police and local groups to keep the village safe. They also help with roads, footpaths, and public transport. Looking after local trees and the environment is also part of their job.

Before 1985, this area was known as Chard parish. But then the boundaries changed, and it became smaller.

Tatworth is also part of South Somerset district. This district council handles things like planning permission for buildings. They also manage local roads, housing, and rubbish collection. Parks and tourism are also their responsibility.

Somerset County Council manages bigger services for the whole county. These include education for schools and social services. They also look after libraries, main roads, and public transport. Police and fire services are also managed by the county council.

Tatworth is also part of the Yeovil area. This area chooses a person to represent them in the House of Commons in London.
