Terminal Peak is a tall mountain in Glacier National Park in British Columbia, Canada. It stands about 2,997 meters (9,833 feet) high. This peak is part of the Selkirk Mountains and is found at the very end of the Sir Donald mountain range.

Where is Terminal Peak?

Terminal Peak is located in a remote area. It is about 62 kilometers (38 miles) northeast of Revelstoke. It is also about 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of Golden. The mountain is part of the Selkirk Mountains range. Its closest higher neighbor is Mount Sir Donald, which is just 1.33 kilometers (0.83 miles) away to the northwest. Another peak, Mount Macoun, is about 7.14 kilometers (4.44 miles) to the south.

What's Around the Peak?

Terminal Peak is surrounded by amazing natural features. To the southwest, there's a huge ice field called the Illecillewaet Névé. A large glacier, the Sir Donald Glacier, sits below the steep northeast side of the mountain. There's also a smaller, unnamed glacier at the bottom of the southeast slope. Water from the melting glaciers and rain flows in two directions. It drains west into the Illecillewaet River and east into the Beaver River.

Who First Climbed It?

The very first time someone successfully climbed to the top of Terminal Peak was in 1906. The climbers were Allan F. Kitchell, Cornelius P. Kitchell, and Edward Feuz Jr. This was a big achievement for them!

How Did It Get Its Name?

The mountain's name, Terminal Peak, makes sense because it's located at the "terminal" or south end of the Sir Donald Range. The name was officially recognized on December 31, 1924. This was done by the Geographical Names Board of Canada.

Weather at Terminal Peak

Terminal Peak is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has very cold and snowy winters. The summers are usually mild. Temperatures can drop below -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit). So, it's a chilly place for most of the year!
