Early life and first steps
Terrence Mann was born in Ashland, Kentucky. He was the oldest of three brothers. His mom was a concert pianist, and his dad sang in a barbershop quartet. Music was a big part of his childhood. Singing came easily to him because of his family. But it was the excitement of the stage that really drew him to theater.
In an interview, Mann shared a fun story. He said that during a school play, the script said, "They kiss." He thought, "This is it! I'm going to be in the theater!" He loved the idea of acting out stories. He was fascinated by how words could lead to such moments. When his school counselor asked about his future, he quickly said, "Go into the theater!"
Mann grew up in Largo, Florida. He finished Largo High School in 1969. His first professional acting job was during his college years. He performed in an outdoor play called The Lost Colony. This was during summers in Manteo, North Carolina. There, he met Joe Layton, who later helped him get his first Broadway show. Mann also studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts.
