Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Terrence Mann was born in Ashland, Kentucky. He was the oldest of three brothers. His mother was a talented concert pianist. His father sang in a barbershop quartet. This meant music was always a big part of his life. Singing came naturally to him.
Mann found his love for the stage early on. He once said that during a school play, a scene ended with a kiss. That's when he knew he wanted to be in theater! He loved the idea of acting out stories and creating special moments on stage.
He grew up in Largo, Florida. After high school, he got his first professional acting job. He performed in an outdoor play called The Lost Colony during his college summers. This experience helped him meet people who would later help him get his first Broadway role. He also studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts.
Broadway Success and Famous Roles
Terrence Mann made his Broadway debut in 1980. He played Chester Lyman in the musical Barnum. His big break came in 1982 with the original Broadway cast of Cats. In this show, he played the popular character, The Rum Tum Tugger. This is also where he met his future wife, Charlotte d'Amboise.

Mann received another Tony Award nomination in 1994. This was for his role as the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. He also played Chauvelin in The Scarlet Pimpernel on Broadway. He has starred in many other Broadway shows, including The Rocky Horror Show and The Addams Family.
