What is the History of Tewin?

The village of Tewin has a long history, going back to Anglo-Saxon times. Its name comes from the language spoken back then.

How Did Tewin Get Its Name?

The Angles, an ancient Germanic people, settled in Tewin around 449 AD. The name "Tewin" likely comes from two Old English words. One is "Tiw," which was the name of the Norse god Týr. The other is "Ing," meaning meadow. So, Tewin might mean "Tiw's meadow."

Over the centuries, the village name changed a few times. In the Domesday Book, it was called "Tewinge" and "Theinge." In the 1500s, it was known as "Tewinge," "Tewing," and "Twywing." It is thought that the name "Tewin" became common in the 1700s.

Who Was Walter Clibbon?

In December 1782, a local pie-maker named Walter Clibbon was seriously hurt near Queen Hoo Hall. He and his two sons were thought to be involved in many local incidents. One of his sons, Joseph, was found guilty in Hertford and faced consequences the next March. However, his other son got away.

You can still see a marker called "Clibbon's Post" in Brickground Wood, just east of Tewin. This is the spot where Walter Clibbon was buried.

A farmer and public official named John Carrington kept diaries from 1798 to 1810. These diaries tell us a lot about what life was like in Tewin during that time.
