About the Texas Banded Gecko
Texas banded geckos are small lizards that live on the ground. They usually grow to be about 10 centimeters (4 inches) long. Their bodies have stripes of yellow and brown or pink colors. These stripes often have black outlines, and sometimes the geckos have black spots too.
When they are young, these geckos have very clear stripes. As they get older, their patterns can become a bit more mixed or mottled.
Where They Live
You can find Texas banded geckos in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico in the United States. In Mexico, they live in areas like Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Durango.
They like places that are a bit dry, called semi-arid habitats. You can often spot them around piles of rocks or in the cracks of canyons.
What They Eat
Texas banded geckos are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. Their main diet is made up of insects and other small arthropods. They will eat many different kinds of tiny creatures, including:
Behavior and Reproduction
These geckos are mostly nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They hunt and eat almost any small arthropod they can find.
Texas banded geckos can make sounds! They sometimes let out little squeaking noises. This usually happens when they feel bothered or when someone handles them.
Reproduction happens in the late spring. The female gecko lays one or two eggs. These eggs are surprisingly large when you compare them to the size of the gecko itself.
Texas Banded Geckos as Pets
Texas banded geckos are not very common as pets. However, because they are small and usually calm, they can make good pets for people who know how to care for them. These geckos are not considered to be in danger of extinction.
