Why Thanamandi is Important
Thanamandi is about 23 kilometers (14 miles) from Rajouri, which is the main city of the district. It sits right on the Mughal Road. This road goes over the Pir Panjal mountains towards Srinagar.
A Road Through History
Long ago, this route was a path for people to move their cattle. It helped them find food for their animals. When the Mughal Road was built, it became a way for vehicles to travel to Srinagar.
Thanamandi was also the place of an important battle in 1420. Two brothers, Shah Miri Sultan Ali Shah and Zain-ul-Abidin, fought here. Zain-ul-Abidin won the battle with help from Raja Jasrat.
A Place of Faith and Trade
Thanamandi is special for its religious importance. It is home to a very respected Sufi saint named Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah. His tomb, called a mausoleum, is at Shahdara Sharief in the town.
You can still see some old forts in Thanamandi. These forts were built a long time ago when the Mughals ruled. The town's name might even come from being a busy trade market, or "mandi," during those times.
