The Brady Kids is an American animated TV show. It is a spin-off of the popular live-action show The Brady Bunch. The cartoon was made by Filmation and Paramount Television. It first aired on ABC on September 9, 1972. The last episode was shown on October 6, 1973. This show also led to another cartoon called Mission: Magic!.

How the Show Started

In 1972, the live-action show The Brady Bunch was getting ready for its fourth season. Sherwood Schwartz, who created The Brady Bunch, had an idea. He wanted to make a cartoon show about the Brady kids.

The animation company Filmation agreed to make the show. Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott from Filmation led the project. They later worked on other shows based on Sherwood Schwartz's ideas.

Meet the Characters

The six children from the original Brady Bunch show voiced their cartoon characters. These actors were Barry Williams, Maureen McCormick, Christopher Knight, Eve Plumb, Mike Lookinland, and Susan Olsen.

The cartoon show focused only on the kids. The parents and the housekeeper, Alice, were not in the cartoon.

Voice Changes in Season 2

After the first season, Filmation asked the kids to continue voicing their roles for five more episodes. These episodes would be part of a second season. At first, the kids said no.

Filmation then said they might sue the actors or continue the show with new voices. Because of this, Mike Lookinland, Eve Plumb, and Susan Olsen agreed to stay. However, Barry Williams, Christopher Knight, and Maureen McCormick did not.

Their voices were replaced by new actors. Lane Scheimer (producer Lou Scheimer's son) voiced Greg. Erika Scheimer (Lou Scheimer's daughter) voiced Marcia. David E. Smith voiced Peter.

New Animal Friends

The cartoon also added some fun animal characters:

  • Marlon: Voiced by Larry Storch, Marlon was a smart, red, talking mynah bird. He was also a wizard who used magic to help the kids. Marlon flew by spinning his tail feathers like a helicopter.
  • Mop Top: This was the Bradys' dog, voiced by Larry Storch. He replaced Tiger, the dog from the live-action show.
  • Ping and Pong: These were twin giant panda cubs, voiced by Jane Webb. They were named after the game ping-pong. They spoke in a funny, gibberish language that sounded like Chinese.

New Human Characters

Three new human characters were also created for the cartoon:

  • Chuck White: Voiced by Larry Storch, Chuck was a boastful teenager. He was often a rival to Greg and sometimes tried to cheat.
  • Fleetwood: Also voiced by Larry Storch, Fleetwood was Chuck's easygoing friend.
  • Babs: Voiced by Jane Webb, Babs was a redhead who liked Greg.

These three characters went to the same school as the Bradys. Chuck often caused trouble for the kids.
