The Oz Kids is an American animated TV show. It's a fantasy comedy-drama based on The Wizard of Oz books by L. Frank Baum. The series first aired on September 14, 1996, on ABC. A total of 26 episodes were made.
The show follows the adventures of the children of the famous characters from Oz. The main characters are Dot and Neddie, who are the children of Dorothy and Zeb. Other characters include the kids of the Cowardly Lion, Tin Woodman, Scarecrow, Jack Pumpkinhead, the Wizard, and Glinda. Like in some other cartoon shows, you usually don't see the faces of most of the grown-ups.
Characters
Main Characters
- Dot Hugson (voiced by Julianne Michelle): Dot is Dorothy and Zeb's 8-year-old daughter. She is Neddie's older sister. Dot is a brave and energetic girl from Kansas. She is the leader of the Oz Kids. Dot is good at thinking clearly in tough situations. She often uses her imagination to solve problems. Dot and her family were brought to Oz by a tornado. She loves adventures but is always happy to return home. Dot is very protective of her younger brother. She also has a magic belt that gives her special powers.
- Neddie Hugson (voiced by Eric Lloyd): Neddie is Dorothy and Zeb's 5-year-old son. He is Dot's charming little brother. Neddie is curious and full of energy, just like his sister. Sometimes, he gets into trouble because he is too trusting. Neddie often needs Dot's help to figure out what to do. He always tries to do the right thing.
- Toto (voiced by Frank Welker): Toto is Dot and Neddie's black dog. He is a Cairn Terrier. He is named after Dorothy's original dog.
Supporting Characters
- Scarecrow, Jr. (voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Scott McAfee): He is the son of the original Scarecrow. His father now rules the Emerald City. Scarecrow Jr. thinks he knows everything. He is very smart but can be childish. He likes to analyze problems and make plans. Sometimes, he doesn't listen to others' ideas. He learns that working as a team is the best way to succeed.
- Tin "Nickie" Boy (voiced by Benjamin Salisbury): Nickie is the son of the Tin Woodman. His father rules the Winkie Country. Nickie is great at building and fixing things. He is also very emotional and cares a lot about others' problems. Nickie is very trusting, which sometimes causes him trouble.
- Boris and Bela (voiced by Bradley Pierce (Boris) and Shayna Fox (Bela)): These two are lion cubs. They are the children of the Cowardly Lion. Their father rules the Quadling Country. Even though they are twins, they are very different.
- Boris is shy and gentle. He gets scared easily. He is Bela's younger brother. But when things get tough, Boris always finds his courage. He often surprises himself and his sister with how brave he can be. Boris loves music and often hums or whistles.
- Bela is a loud and strong lion cub. She can be a bit bossy and thinks her ideas are always best. She is Boris's older sister. Bela tries to act tough, but she has the same worries as other kids her age. Her boldness sometimes gets her into trouble. She also finds it hard to show her feelings, especially to Boris.
- Jack Pumpkinhead, Jr. (voiced by Aaron Michael Metchik): He is the son of Jack Pumpkinhead, Sr. His father is an elder in Emerald City. Jack Jr. is a bit delicate and very neat. He doesn't like to get his hands or clothes dirty. He is obsessed with being clean. Despite this, he often ends up getting messier than his friends. He can also surprise his friends with good ideas for solving problems.
- Frank (voiced by Alex Zuckerman): Frank is the son of the Wizard of Oz. His father lives in Oz and works with the Scarecrow. Frank is 10 years old, making him the oldest of the kids. He is like his father, a bit showy and likes to invent things. Frank is always eager for exciting and risky adventures. He is an inventor and often has a gadget for any situation. More than anyone, Frank wants to go back to the real world. But when he does, he usually misses Oz.
- Andrea (voiced by Shay Astar): Andrea is the daughter of Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. She is pretty and gentle. Andrea has magic powers, but she isn't always sure how to use them best. She likes to use her powers to her advantage. She sometimes feels left out by the group. When she feels excluded, she might play a magic prank. Andrea can be a troublemaker, but she really just wants to be included. When needed, she uses her magic to help the group, even if she caused the problem herself.
- Dorothy Gale Hugson (voiced by Erika Schickel): Dot and Neddie's mother and Zeb's wife.
- Zeb Hugson (voiced by Ross Maplettoft): Dot and Neddie's father and Dorothy's husband.
- Scarecrow, Sr. (voiced by Andy Milder): Scarecrow, Jr.'s father.
- Tin Woodman (voiced by Steve Stoliar): Tin Boy's father.
- Cowardly Lion: Boris and Bela's father.
- Jack Pumpkinhead, Sr. (voiced by Ross Maplettoft): Jack, Jr.'s father.
- The Wizard of Oz (voiced by Steve Stoliar): Frank's father.
- Glinda the Good Witch (voiced by Erika Schickel): Andrea's mother.
- Aunt Scraps (Patchwork Girl) (voiced by Lori Alan): She has many baby patchwork kids, including a girl named Betty.
- Betty: Patchwork Girl's baby daughter.
- Rick (voiced by Lawrence Tierney (1996) and James Keane (1997)): Rick was a homeless man from Manhattan. The Oz children helped him, and he came to live in Oz. In Oz, Rick found a home and friends. He is good at solving arguments between people. Rick is very childlike and understands kids well. He often joins in their activities. He is very thankful to the children and always helps them. Rick is also very clever when the children are in danger.
- Santa Claus (voiced by Marc Allen Lewis): Santa delivers presents on Christmas. He was once kidnapped by two "oggs" along with Boris. The Oz Kids helped rescue them. Santa then celebrated in the Land of Oz before going home to deliver presents.
- Toby (voiced by Jarrett Lennon): A young flying monkey.
- Gumpette (voiced by Jason Renfro): A flying creature the kids use to fly around.
Villains
- Mombi (voiced by Darlene Cornley): Mombi is a bad witch who was banished for many years. She came back trying to take over Oz. She stole Dot's magic belt to get what she wanted. But in the end, she drank some special water and forgot everything. The Oz Kids told her she was a kind lady who loved children. So, she became friends with them.
- Otto (voiced by Chauncey Leopardi): Otto is the son of the Nome King. His father tried to take over Oz before but was stopped by Dorothy. Otto wants revenge for what he thinks was done to his father. Otto lives in a cave and is often told by his father not to leave. He usually ignores this advice. He sneaks out to cause trouble for the other Oz children. Otto often tries to turn the kids against each other. He is especially interested in getting Andrea to join him. Otto is usually outsmarted, but he always has a new plan.
