The Quest for Fire (which means The War of Fire in French) is an exciting fantasy novel from 1911. It was written by "J.-H. Rosny", which was the pen name for a Belgian author named Joseph Henri Honoré Boex. The book was first published in English in a shorter version in 1967.
This book tells a thrilling story set a very long time ago. It was even made into a popular movie in 1981 called Quest for Fire, starring Ron Perlman. However, the movie tells a slightly different story than the book.

Exploring the Prehistoric World
The Quest for Fire takes you back in time to about 100,000 BC. This was during the Stone Age, and the story happens in Europe. The world was very different then, filled with amazing and sometimes dangerous animals.
Ancient Animals You'll Meet
The book features many creatures that lived during this ancient period. Imagine seeing huge mammoths walking around! There were also fierce cave lions and massive aurochs, which were like wild cattle.
Other animals included giant cave bears, scary saber-toothed cats with long teeth, and enormous giant elks with huge antlers. You might also spot speedy saiga antelopes in this prehistoric landscape.
Different Groups of People
In this ancient world, various groups of humanoid people lived alongside these animals. Each group had its own unique way of life:
- The Ulams: These people were like Neanderthals. They were skilled hunters and gatherers. The Ulams deeply respected fire and could even form friendships with some wild beasts.
- The Wahs: This group lived in marshes. They are described as having a unique body shape, without shoulders.
- The Blue-Haired Men: These were huge, ape-like creatures with bluish fur. They were unusual because they had four hands!
- The Men-Eaters: This group was very wild and dangerous. They were known for their fierce and aggressive behavior.
- The Red Dwarfs: These were small people, like pygmies. They were very warlike and didn't like outsiders at all.
