Theodore Ayrault Dodge (born May 28, 1842 – died October 26, 1909) was an American officer, a writer about military history, and a businessman. He fought as an officer for the Union Army during the American Civil War. As a writer, he loved to study and write about the Civil War. He also wrote about famous generals from ancient times and European history.

Early Life and Education
Theodore Ayrault Dodge was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He received a special military education in Berlin, Germany. He also studied at University College London and the University of Heidelberg. These experiences helped him learn a lot about military strategies and history.
Fighting in the Civil War
When he returned to the United States in 1861, he quickly joined the army. He started as a private in the New York volunteer infantry. During the American Civil War, he showed great courage and skill. He rose through the ranks to become a brevet lieutenant-colonel. Sadly, he lost his right leg during the Battle of Gettysburg.
After his injury, he worked at the War Department starting in 1864. In 1866, he became an officer in the regular army. He retired from the army in 1870 with the rank of major.
Life After the Army
After retiring from the military, Dodge lived in Boston. He tried to start several businesses that made hydraulic hoses. However, these businesses were not successful. Later, he founded the Boston Woven Hose and Rubber Company in 1884. This company was based on a new type of machine for making tubes.
He later moved to Paris, France, where he passed away. Theodore Ayrault Dodge was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. This is a special place where many American military heroes are laid to rest.
A Military Historian
Theodore Ayrault Dodge became a very respected military historian. He wrote important books about the Civil War. These include The Campaign of Chancellorsville (published in 1881). He also wrote Bird's Eye View of the Civil War (published in 1883).
From 1890 to 1907, he worked on a huge project. He published twelve books called History of the Art of War. These books covered the lives and strategies of famous generals. He wrote about Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Caesar, Gustavus Adolphus, and Napoleon. He started writing about Frederick the Great, but he passed away before finishing those volumes.
His personal military journal has also been published. This journal covers his time with the Army of the Potomac. It tells about his experiences from the Seven Days Battles up to the Battle of Gettysburg. This journal is called On Campaign with the Army of the Potomac: The Civil War Journal of Theodore Ayrault Dodge.
