Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham (born November 30, 1738 – died July 20, 1786) was an important British politician. He is best known for being the Foreign Secretary from 1782 to 1783. This role meant he handled Britain's relationships with other countries.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Robinson was born in Vienna, Austria. His father, also named Thomas Robinson, was the British Ambassador to Austria at the time. This means his father represented Britain in Austria.

Young Thomas went to Westminster School, a famous school in London. After that, he studied at Christ's College, Cambridge, one of the well-known universities in England.

Political Career Highlights

Thomas Robinson started his political journey in 1761. He became a member of parliament for a place called Christchurch.

In 1770, his father passed away. Thomas then inherited his father's title and became the 2nd Baron Grantham. This meant he became a member of the House of Lords. In the same year, he joined the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the King or Queen.

From 1771 to 1779, he worked as the British Ambassador to Spain. This was a very important job, as he represented Britain in Spain. He stayed in this role until a war started between Britain and Spain.

After his time as an ambassador, Grantham held other key positions. From 1780 to 1782, he was the President of the Board of Trade. This role involved looking after Britain's trade and business.

His most important job was being the Foreign Secretary. He held this position from July 1782 to April 1783. In this role, he was in charge of Britain's foreign policy. This means he managed how Britain interacted with other countries around the world.

In 1780, Lord Grantham married Lady Mary Yorke. They had two sons together.

Their sons also became important figures:

Lord Grantham and his wife lived in a house called Grantham House in Westminster, London.

Later Years and Death

Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham, passed away on July 20, 1786. He was only 46 years old.

After his death, his eldest son inherited his title. His wife, Lady Mary, continued to live at Grantham House until she died in 1830.
