Three Twins Ice Cream was a company in California that made organic ice cream. It started in 2005. Three Twins had three ice cream shops in Northern California. They also sold their ice cream to stores all over the country. The company closed down in April 2020.
The Story of Three Twins Ice Cream
Three Twins Ice Cream began in 2005 in Terra Linda, a part of San Rafael, California. A person named Neal Gottlieb, who went to Cornell University, started the company. He named it "Three Twins" because he is a twin, and his brother is also a twin married to another twin!
This company was the first chain of organic ice cream shops in the United States. They started selling their ice cream at the Berkeley Farmers Market. Later, a big store called Whole Foods discovered them there. This helped Three Twins start selling their ice cream all over the country.
In 2010, Three Twins opened a factory in Petaluma, California. This is where they made their ice cream. In 2019, they moved all their ice cream making to a different factory in Wisconsin. However, their main office stayed in Petaluma.
Sadly, on April 17, 2020, the company announced it was closing. This happened because they had money problems, which got worse due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Where Were the Shops?
By November 2017, Three Twins Ice Cream had four shops that they owned. These were in San Francisco, Larkspur, Napa, and San Rafael. They also had other shops that were licensed (like franchises) in Berkeley, Santa Monica, and at the San Francisco airport. They even sold their ice cream to South Korea!
One shop at Fisherman's Wharf had closed earlier. The San Francisco shop in the Lower Haight area closed in January 2018. By April 2020, the Santa Monica shop had also closed. However, the company still had licensed shops in Tokyo and Seoul.
Delicious Ice Cream Flavors
Three Twins Ice Cream had many different flavors. Some were always available, like Mint Confetti. This was mint ice cream with small pieces of dark chocolate. Another popular flavor was Strawberry Je Ne Sais Quoi, which was strawberry ice cream with a little bit of balsamic vinegar.
They also had special flavors that changed often. One was called Cookie Jar, which was vanilla ice cream with three different kinds of cookies mixed in. Their first shop was known for some unique and fun flavors. They even created a very expensive dessert called the Absurdity Sundae. It cost $3,333.33 and included a banana split with fancy syrups made from rare dessert wines.
