Timothy's World Coffee, often just called Timothy's, is a well-known Canadian company. It's famous for roasting coffee beans and has many coffee shops. It's a popular place to grab a hot drink and a snack.

The Start of Timothy's Coffee

Timothy Snelgrove and his wife Teresa started Timothy's in 1975. It began as a school project for Timothy at the University of Western Ontario. At first, they only sold roasted coffee beans. Later, they started selling brewed coffee too. The very first Timothy's coffee shop opened in a mall in London, Ontario.

In 1986, Ian and Becky McKinnon bought Timothy's. They helped the company grow even more. They opened more coffee shops and started selling coffee wholesale to other businesses. Timothy's also began making K-Cups for Keurig coffee makers.

Timothy's Grows Beyond Canada

Expanding into the United States

In the mid-1990s, Timothy's opened stores in the United States. They focused on New York City, but also had shops in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. For a while, it was the second-largest coffee shop chain in New York City. After the events of September 11, 2001, Timothy's closed its U.S. stores. The company then focused more on its Canadian shops and selling coffee wholesale.

Expanding into South Korea

Timothy's opened its first international store in Seoul, South Korea, on May 19, 2007. This was a big step for the company.

Timothy's Business Today

Timothy's has bought back many of its Canadian stores. The company also took over the mmmuffins and Michel's Baguette businesses. Today, there are about 30 Timothy's stores across Canada.

Timothy's also sells coffee to other businesses. They provide coffee for offices and package coffee into K-Cups. You can also find their coffee in hotels, grocery stores, and sports clubs. In 2009, they even created a special "Presidential No. 44" coffee blend. This was to celebrate a visit by U.S. President Barack Obama to Canada.

Changes in Ownership

Green Mountain and Bruegger's Take Over

On November 13, 2009, two companies bought parts of Timothy's. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters bought Timothy's wholesale coffee business. This part of Timothy's continued to operate as a Canadian company. At the same time, Bruegger's Enterprises, Inc. bought Timothy's coffee shops. Bruegger's also took control of mmmuffins and Michel's Baguette. They planned to keep all three brands running.

MTY Food Group Acquires Timothy's

In 2018, MTY Food Group bought Timothy's World Coffee and Mmmuffins retail operations. MTY Food Group is a large Canadian company that owns many different restaurant brands.
