Timothy's World Coffee, often called Timothy's, is a well-known Canadian company. It roasts coffee beans and has a chain of coffeeshops. You can find their coffee in many places, from cafes to grocery stores.

How Timothy's Started

Timothy's began in 1975. A man named Timothy Snelgrove and his wife, Teresa, started it. They first sold special roasted coffee beans. Timothy got the idea for the company from a project he did in business school.

The company grew over time. Soon, they started selling brewed coffee too. The very first Timothy's cafe opened in a mall in London, Ontario.

In 1986, Ian and Becky McKinnon bought Timothy's. They helped the company grow even more. They opened more cafes and started selling coffee to other businesses. Timothy's also began making K-Cups for Keurig coffee makers. These are small pods that make single cups of coffee.

Later, in 2008, a company called Sun Capital Partners became involved with Timothy's.

Big Changes for Timothy's

On November 13, 2009, some big news came out. Two other companies decided to buy parts of Timothy's. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters bought the part of Timothy's that sold coffee to other businesses. This is called the wholesale business.

At the same time, Bruegger's Enterprises, Inc. bought the Timothy's cafes. They also bought Timothy's partner restaurants, mmmuffins and Michel's Baguette. These were bought through a company called ThreeCaf Brands Canada Inc.

Timothy's used to roast its own coffee beans in Toronto. This helped them make sure the coffee was fresh. However, in 2015, their roasting plant in Toronto closed. Now, their coffee is roasted at the Van Houtte plant in Quebec.

Timothy's Around the World

Timothy's in the United States

In the mid-1990s, Timothy's cafes opened in the United States. Many were in New York City. You could also find them in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. For a while, Timothy's was the second-biggest coffee chain in New York City, after Starbucks.

After a major event in 2001, Timothy's closed its cafes in the U.S. The company then focused more on Canada and selling coffee to other businesses.

Timothy's in South Korea

Timothy's also opened a cafe far away in Seoul, South Korea. This first overseas store opened on May 19, 2007.

Timothy's Today

Today, Timothy's has bought back its cafes in Canada. It also owns the mmmuffins and Michel's Baguette cafe businesses. There are about 30 Timothy's cafes across Canada.

Timothy's also has a large business selling coffee to other companies. They supply coffee to offices and make K-Cups for Keurig coffee makers. You can find their coffee in hotels, grocery stores, and sports clubs too.

In February 2009, Timothy's created a special coffee blend. They called it "Presidential No. 44" to celebrate a visit by U.S. President Barack Obama to Canada.

MTY Food Group Buys Timothy's

In 2018, a company called MTY Food Group bought the Timothy's World Coffee and Mmmuffins cafes. They bought them from a company called Le Duff America.
