Thomas Allen Brown (born May 24, 1937 – died April 4, 2020) was an American actor, singer, and professional football player. He was also known as Timothy Brown and Timmy Brown. He played in the National Football League (NFL) as a running back and kick returner.

Early Life and School

Timothy Brown was born in Richmond, Indiana. He grew up in Knightstown, which is east of Indianapolis. He graduated from Morton Memorial High School in 1955.

Football Career Highlights

Brown played college football at Ball State College in Muncie, Indiana. He was chosen in the 1959 NFL draft. As a professional player, he was often called "Timmy" Brown.

He played for three NFL teams:

  • The Green Bay Packers for one game.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles for eight seasons.
  • The Baltimore Colts for one season.

Brown scored the last touchdown in the 1968 NFL Championship Game. His final game was two weeks later in Super Bowl III with the Colts.

Awards and Records

Timothy Brown was a very skilled player.

  • He went to the Pro Bowl three times: in 1962, 1963, and 1965.
  • He is the only player in Philadelphia Eagles history to return a kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown.
  • He is also the only Eagle to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same game. These were 90-yard and 93-yard returns.
  • He led the league twice in total yards gained (called "all-purpose yards"). This happened in 1962 and 1963.
  • He also led the league in kick returns and return yards twice, in 1961 and 1963.

After playing, Brown also worked as a sports announcer for CBS NFL games in 1973.

Acting Career

When Timothy Brown started acting, he used the name "Timothy Brown." This helped people tell him apart from Jim Brown, another famous football player who also became an actor.

His acting career started while he was still playing football. He appeared on the TV show The Wild Wild West in 1967.

Movies and TV Shows

After retiring from the NFL, Brown became a full-time actor. He appeared in several movies, including:

  • MASH (1970)
  • Sweet Sugar (1972)
  • Black Gunn (1972)
  • Bonnie's Kids (1973)
  • Dynamite Brothers (1974)
  • Nashville (1975)
  • Gus (1976)

He also played Dr. Oliver Harmon "Spearchucker" Jones in the first season of the M*A*S*H TV series. He was one of only four actors who appeared in both the original MASH movie and the TV show.

Brown also made guest appearances on other TV shows. He was on Adam-12 three times and The Mary Tyler Moore Show once.

Music Career

Timothy Brown started singing when he was in college at Ball State. He also learned to tap dance.

In 1962, he recorded songs like "I Got Nothin' But Time" and "Silly Rumors." He also performed in stage shows. In 1964, he led a show at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He sang popular songs like "What'd I Say" and "Do You Want to Know a Secret."

His singing was also featured in the 1975 film Nashville and on its soundtrack.
